Key Takeaways

  1. The food, agriculture, and land use sector contributes ~22% of global emissions, making it a major source of climate pollution. Major emissions sources within this sector include deforestation (11.2%), methane from animals (5%), soil management (3.2%), methane from rice (1.7%), manure management (0.7%), and biomass burning (0.1%).

  2. We have a portfolio of solutions and we need them all. Our top priority should be cutting emissions by reducing food waste, shifting to plant-rich diets, protecting standing forests, and using low-emission farming techniques. We can also restore ecosystems and use regenerative farming techniques to remove some carbon from the atmosphere.

  3. This year, Project Drawdown will be launching a new food initiative, which will include a new solutions framework as well as a more detailed geographical mapping of solutions.
